While weight lifting is a great way to get into better shape and sculpt your body, it can also be very dangerous, and a weight lifting belt should always be available wherever you work out. They are not necessary for every exercise, but essential to others and with good reason.

A weight lifting belt provides added support to your back and abdominal muscles when you are lifting weights, and can mean the difference between a strong lower back and a strained lower back under certain circumstances.

One of the most popular exercises for building muscle throughout the entire body is the dead lift. Basically, the lifter stands with his legs parted and a barbell in front of him on the floor. He then lifts it off of the ground and up to waist level, and then sit it back on the ground.

It is very important to use a weight lifting belt when doing this particular exercise, because you are putting a lot of stress on your lower back. The belt will provide support to your lower back and lower the risk of sustaining an injury.

One exercise for which I always use a weight lifting belt is squats. With free weights, squats involve placing a barbell across your shoulders and squatting down into an almost seated position, then standing back up straight. It can also put a tremendous strain on your back, shoulders and neck, so a belt is always helpful with this exercise.

There are also exercises for which you do not really need a weight lifting belt. Curls, for building your biceps, are one such exercise. You also don't really need a belt for doing French curls, which work your triceps, or bench presses, which is probably the most well known weight lifting exercise.

The best guide is just good old-fashioned common sense. Always start a weight lifting exercise with a lighter weight that isn't too hard to manipulate. If you feel any strain or pain in your back while using a light weight, you should stop immediately and put on a weight lifting belt.

You don't want to end up like a friend of mine, who was stubbornly proud of the fact that he never took any safety precautions while lifting weights. He was very athletic and got away with his bad habits for a long time, but when he got into his 30s, he learned a hard lesson about getting older.

One day he decided to increase the maximum weight on his squat by 30 pounds, even though you should never attempt to increase your max by more than 10 pounds at a time. He defiantly refused to wear a weight lifting belt, and he couldn't hold the bar atop his shoulders for even a few seconds, instead falling down as the barbell crashed to the floor behind him.

He tried to stand up, but yelled, grabbed his lower back and fell back down. He had to be helped into a chair, and when he finally got to the doctor, he found that he had severely strained his lower back and actually came dangerously close to a ruptured disc. He was given a week of bed rest and four more weeks of therapy. Needless to say, two months later when he finally tried squats again, he made sure to put on a weight lifting belt.

I studied psychology in college and had a great professor who tried to introduce us to as many real-world situations as possible. He made it a point to invite guest speakers on a regular basis that would share their experiences with a mental health disorder they had or trauma they had experienced.

A lady named Sheryl came in and spoke to us at great length about her experience with verbal and emotional abuse, and how it affected her. She said that her husband never actually harmed her physically, but said the psychological abuse she suffered was almost unbearable and added that it took her a long time to recover.

She told us that when she and her husband first met, he was charming and respectful towards her, and she thought that she was getting the perfect man. A few months into their relationship, however, she soon realized that the comments she had once taken as being sarcastic were actually belittling and degrading to her.

She said she felt like she was a victim of verbal and emotional abuse but was not completely sure, and when she told him about it, he laughed at her and told her she was being too sensitive. She said she initially just tried to let it go, but as time went by, she felt worse and worse.

This went on for years, and she gradually started to experience the symptoms of depression. She would even feel anxiety attacks when she knew that he was coming home from work. She said the verbal and emotional abuse took such a severe toll on her that she felt as if she had absolutely no self-esteem left whatsoever.

She said she finally got the courage to leave him when her brother came to visit them for a week, got to see first hand the verbal and emotional abuse to which she was being subjected, and basically insisted that she leave her husband and never return. She said her brother and now ex-husband almost came to blows over the treatment of his sister.

The years of verbal abuse took their toll on Sheryl, and she said it took a long time and lots of therapy before she got any of her self-worth back. She told us that on numerous occasions her ex-husband called trying to get her back, but after she would refuse, he would start putting her down again and telling her that she would never find anyone else.

Then, she proudly held up her left hand and revealed a wedding band on her ring finger to a loud ovation from the class. She told us that she had found a wonderful man with whom she was very happy, and finished by saying that verbal and emotional abuse is very real and quite painful. While the bumps and bruises of physical abuse show on a person, she told us, the emotional scars of verbal abuse are not always as noticeable.

Do Hollywood stars really have hidden secrets when it comes to ultimate weight loss results? This is probably not true since most of them practically live on diets (mostly fad diets) and they never seem to get fat. What do they need secrets for if they are on perpetual low caloric intake programs? There are several easy tips however that one can use that will guarantee ultimate weight loss results in a short period of time. These tips are easy to follow and will help you to shed those unwanted pounds and inches.

One very easy secret to ultimate weight loss is to follow the three day rule. The three day rule is simple to understand and start but much harder to stick to, especially the first time that you attempt it. Simply stated, you begin your diet and exercise program and you stick to it religiously for 3 straight days. The 4th day, whether you want to or not, you go off the program and eat whatever you like. The next day you start all over again and do another three days straight of diet and exercise with the fourth day off. This is one of the ultimate weight loss secrets that is most effective and you should not be surprised when you drop the weight in big chunks.

Another ultimate weight loss secret is to not weigh yourself for at least a week after beginning any program. That means putting the scale away and not sneaking a peek no matter how much you are tempted to do so. Many of the top dieting programs such as Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers, and Nutrisystems teach this technique. After one week, go ahead and weigh yourself and you will be very pleased with the results. If you weigh yourself each day you will be disappointed on the days you don't lose or gain weight, even if you have done your best to stick to your diet and exercise. This is because most true weight loss does not happen until three to four days after the actual diet or exercise is done. Any rapid weight loss on a single day is most likely due to water weight being lost through sweating and not to real fat loss.

Muscle weighs more than fat and that means that you should work out with light weights and do more aerobic exercises like the Lifecycle or treadmill. Experts say that you need at least thirty to forty five minutes of hard aerobic exercise in order to start losing water weight. A lot of people go to the gym regularly but they never break a sweat. If you are not dripping wet with sweat after every workout then you are just not working out hard enough. You need to be breathing deeply and practically gasping for air when you work out otherwise you are just wasting your time. This is the theory behind Spinning and Step Class and we all know how very effective both of those techniques are when it comes to ultimate weight loss.

Do you remember how you slept last night? If you are over 50, chances are overwhelming, that half the time, you don't get the kind of chance at a good night's shuteye that you did when you were younger. Your entire well-being depends on the way your brain can relax well enough to slide into worry-free sleep day in and day out. Forget nutrition, or great supplements; if you can get a good nights sleep, there is nothing quite like it for the way you age. Especially when you are over 60. And this is the time, sadly, that sleeping difficulty sets in.

So what is it that goes on in the brain, that it so reliably loses its ability to put you to sleep as it ages? The thing is, just as your body changes as it ages, becoming looser, less able to tolerate disease or recovering after a hard day's work, so does the brain change for the worse. Expecting to sink into a blackhole of sound sleep at 60, just doesn't take into account some fundamental rules of basic physiology. At 20, you can take no more than two minutes to fall sleep when you hit the pillow. 30 years later, it can take up to a half hour. Scientists don't really know what exactly happens; but age changes the way you sleep, in a very striking and recognizable pattern.

As we age, a good way of battling sleeping difficulty would be to go back to the simple way our lives were when we were growing up. And that means, not really having the computer or television turned on in the time leading up to bed time. We need to just establish a simple reassuring pattern of activities right before bedtime - a ritual if you will. A good way would be to drop everything at a given exact hour, and go pamper yourself with a little cream rub-in, a little warm milk, and a little gentle music while you turn off almost all the lights, to help the body slow down. People who do this, according to a study, take a half hour less to fall sleep, and they stay asleep a hour longer. And if you take in a good deal of regular exercise, extended running or walking for instance, you can count on the same kind of sleeping benefits, just as long as you don't do it up to six hours before bedtime.

But what if sleeping difficulty comes to you when you're young? That's the age when we get knocked out at the dinner table if we so choose. Who doesn't have an entertaining story of how completely sleepy they were they couldn't tell where they were or what they were doing? Even with such wonderful sleeping capital biology gives us it is possible to ruin with modern lifestyles. Too much time spent at the computer just hops our brains up, and makes it very difficult to get to sleep. Things have just become more difficult now that online gaming is all the rage. If you have a friend in China whom you feel is your sworn computer gaming enemy to beat, it can be very difficult for both of you, to sleep when you know that there is an online game to play. In the gaming world where they sell gaming gear that is often three times as expensive for sub-millisecond improvements in response time all to "help you shoot the enemy before he can respond", it is a wonder that young people don't see how sleep deprivation compromises their abilities. Sleep problems at this stage can lead to sleep problems that are harder to treat at a later age too. A great way to come to grips with the situation would be to visit a sleep clinic. The doctor will probably be able to give you lots of little insights; one of which will be that sleeping in a room you have your gaming setup stacked up in, can be quite harmful to your sleep. Blinking LEDs are very bad for your sleep.

Just remember, sleeping fewer than seven hours a day, puts you at three times the risk of catching opportunistic infections like a viral fever or cold. Not to mention weight gain. If you sleep fewer than six hours a day, you may think you're working just fine, but yourability to think on your feet is greatly compromised. Sleep fewer than five hours a day, you put yourself on the fast-track to diabetes.

Back in the seventies and eighties it seemed that there were new fad diets coming around nearly every week. First it was the all fruit juice diet, then the no fruit juice diet. Some diets were all about beets and beet juice (yuck) and some diets were all about eliminating all dairy products. No fat or low fat diets were very popular for a while until scientists debunked them because most of them had high caloric content which actually made you gain weight. We all of course know about the protein diets that eliminated most of the carbohydrates from the diet like the Atkins diet. One thing is for certain, for real, effective, safe weight loss you first need to understand how the body works and what effect certain foods have on our bodies.

We all know those types of people that are naturally skinny and can eat anything they want without getting fat. There seem to be these people everywhere we look, especially on TV, the movies, or in all the magazines. They seem to be mocking us regular folks with their smug attitudes and easy fit lifestyles while the rest of us have to shop at big and tall stores and hit the gym every day with the false hope of losing an inch or two. Why can some people eat anything they want and some get fat just looking at rich foods? Genetics does have a lot to do with it, but so does the absence of certain neurotransmitters in the brain that tell you when you are full. If you don't have these signals, you will keep on eating even if you should be feeling full.

When you first get a plate of food and you are hungry everything tastes great and your brain tells your body to eat in order to survive. For naturally skinny people when they eat a sufficient amount, the brain sends out signals to make them stop eating. As they feel fuller, the food starts tasting not so good anymore. All of this is a natural system that ensures that we eat just enough to continue to live. For fat people or people who have a propensity to gain weight (and that is a lot of people in the U.S.), the mechanism is broken and somehow the brain refuses to tell them that they are full and should stop eating.

To achieve safe weight loss then one must eat foods that will break the cycle. Certain foods at certain times of the day will trigger our brains to shut down our eating. In the morning it is best to eat protein, and that means egg white omelets with some lean ham and some veggies tossed in. A mid morning snack will keep the metabolism burning and let you have safe weight loss without feeling hungry. Lunch should be a salad without croutons and just a little bit of dressing. Mid afternoon you need another snack such as an apple or a Zone Perfect bar. Dinner needs to be some lean meat and brown rice or one slice of lean whole wheat bread. If you crave a snack in the evening, try some light yogurt. Stop eating sugar of any kind and no fried foods.

Safe weight loss will result if you combine this plan with a consistent exercise routine that includes aerobics and some weight training at least four times a week. Exercise and lots of small, carefully planned meals during the day will result in safe weight loss.

What is the best running shoe or cross-trainer for you? Depends on many factors and you need to ask yourself a few questions first. It would be easy to outfit every foot in the world with running shoes for men if every athlete's feet were exactly the same. Since every foot is different, and every runner or athlete is different, it goes to reason that you need to get the shoe that is just right for you.

What kind of sport you do, where you workout, how many times a week, your age, your relative health, your level of fitness, your dedication to working out, all of these factors come into focus when choosing the proper footwear. Are you losing weight? Are you recovering from a disability? Are you training for the Olympics? This last one is just wishful thinking. Unless you are from a very regionally isolated country, if you are competing for an Olympic medal you will have had your shoes selected for you by a team of scientists, unless you are from Kenya and run barefoot that is.

If you are an average American man somewhere between 35 and 55 years of age and you are selecting your running shoes for your morning jog around the park, then you can probably just go to your local Foot Locker and pick out a pair of Nikes or Reeboks that fit your feet. If you are on a budget (and who isn't these days?) you can get some of the very same name brand running shoes for men at discounters like Nordstrom Rack, Marshalls, Burlington Coat Factory, TJ Maxx, or your local equivalent to these stores. They have huge aisles upon aisles of great running and training shoes for you to choose from. It's a little more difficult finding your size at these joints but if you have a little patience and don't mind a crowd, then you could find an incredible bargain. Marshalls, for instance, carries Reebok, New Balance, and even some Nikes, among other off-brands. Even Costco has some great shoe bargains, albeit a much tighter selection.

When it comes to running shoes for men, it is all about comfort. For me personally the most comfortable shoes are those without that big handle in the back because I have found that this cloth handle hits my Achilles every time due to the shape of my foot. If you have a club foot you may want to shop somewhere else. If you have problems with falling arches you may want to consult your foot doctor first or get prescription insoles.

Whatever your special need, there are running shoes for men to match your requirements. For most of us amateurs it is just about finding a comfortable shoe that fits your budget and looks good on your feet.

I'm someone who has had to deal with high blood pressure most of my adult life, and I have studied different ways of reducing it that do not require medication. What I have found is that there are many ways of reducing blood pressure that cost little or nothing and can be done on your own without a doctor's assistance.

The first thing that I discovered when visiting a local vitamin shop was a supplement called "Blood Pressure Factor." It includes a number of natural ingredients in a pill that you can take three times a day. I have never taken Blood Pressure Factor personally, but I had a friend who was not very active who started taking it and said it did lower his blood pressure a number of points. It was not very expensive, either.

I have also heard of a number of foods that, when eaten as part of a balanced diet, can really help in reducing blood pressure. These foods include skim milk, spinach, unsalted sunflower seeds, soybeans, potatoes, bananas, and even dark chocolate. It is kind of comforting to know that you can lower your blood pressure through your diet as well.

One of the best things to do for reducing blood pressure is to exercise, and in particular, walk, on a regular basis. I read one study that said walking daily is thought to be as good as taking blood pressure medication in terms of keeping your blood pressure under control, not to mention that it will help you to stay in shape, which brings me to my next point.

If you are looking at reducing blood pressure and are overweight, it is important to understand that being overweight can cause a person to have high blood pressure, and often times the blood pressure will come down as the weight comes off.

Other things that are important in reducing blood pressure include watching your salt intake and trying to manage your stress level. A good thing to do if you have a very high-stress life is to do yoga or Pilates, or learn relaxation techniques.

One should also avoid smoking to reduce blood pressure, as well as drinking to excess. Drinking a little bit, however, particularly wine, is thought to be good for your heart and should not be cut out completely.

There are many things that can be done if you are looking at reducing blood pressure, and they don't all involve a trip to the doctor or getting on medication. In some cases, taking a prescribed medication is the only way to get your blood pressure down, but I would give some of these other things a try first.

Your heart swells in anticipation, you feel your baby kick for the first time, and you gain a few pounds knowing it is for a very good reason. However, there are also some more annoying things that happen during pregnancy that can cause more than a minor irritation. One of those things is pregnancy heartburn. It starts out as an occasional but relatively minor annoyance, but can then grow into something extremely painful for some women.

Some women do not experience pregnancy heartburn, but most do to some extent. The changes in the body can cause it at first, meaning your stomach may be more delicate than it use to be and you have more pregnancy heartburn than you would have regular heartburn for foods you are use to eating all of the time. If you find that foods are starting to bother you, giving you nausea and heartburn, tweak your menu for foods that your body finds more agreeable while you are pregnant. You may also want to avoid those foods while breastfeeding as well.

Pregnancy heartburn can get worse as you go through the second and on into the third trimesters of pregnancy. This is because the baby is growing and there is less space inside of you. Your organs are shifting a bit, and things are getting cramped. Your stomach may be squeezed a bit, or forced to move up. This will cause all types of problems with pregnancy heartburn. The muscle between the stomach and the esophagus may not work as well due to odd position, allowing the acids from your stomach to go up to your throat, causing you pain.

What can you do about pregnancy heartburn? First you can modify your diet. This is not going to solve the problem if you have bad heartburn, but it can offer you some relief. The foods that typically cause stomach pain in pregnancy heartburn are the ones that trigger acid production. You can also eat smaller but more frequent meals. This can also help keep foods and acids in the stomach where you want them to stay. This offers some relief, but may not do the trick towards the end of your pregnancy.

In other cases, you are going to need more help with pregnancy heartburn. You may need to take some over the counter antacids, but you should make sure the choice you make is a safe one. Talk to your doctor about the type of pain you are having with your pregnancy heartburn, along with the amount of time each day you spend feeling pain from heartburn. Allow them to tell you what is safe to take and what you should avoid, and then make your choice form the list of acceptable remedies for heartburn. You may still have occasional pain, but it should be much better. Your attacks may happen less often and the severity should be much, much easier to handle.

When I decided to start losing weight a number of years ago, I researched every aspect of dieting and exercise to try to determine the best way to take off the weight and keep it off. What I discovered was that I had to not only change the foods I was eating, but that portion control would be really key to permanent weight loss.

One of the things I realized I was doing wrong when I was trying to lose weight was eating to much at each sitting. I took time to actually measure out the serving sizes listed on the various food products that I was eating, and found that I was eating two and a half to three times as much as I should have been.

When I started exercising some portion control, I noticed that I was shedding weight like nobody's business. I began to eat smaller meals more often during the day, and it really revved up my metabolism and I was losing steadily each week.

One of the more interesting things about portion control is something I certainly don't advocate when someone is dieting. However, even on those occasions that I was not as good as I should have been and ate fast food or something else that I shouldn't be eating, as long as I did not overdo it and kept the amount of food I ate to smaller portions, I did not gain weight.

I started to realize portion control, at least for me, was the most important aspect of dieting. I also learned that it is not so much what you eat that is the most important thing but how much you eat.

Another great thing about portion control for me was that, for some reason, I had always felt like I needed to be stuffed in order to be full. I mistook eating to the point of feeling bloated with being satiated. I realized after a few weeks that I was stuffing myself before, which was part of the reason why I had put on weight. A lot of things were becoming easier for me.

For one thing, I started to sleep a lot better at night. I also found that I did not have heartburn anymore and I no longer suffered from bouts of nausea, which I really had a problem with before I started watching my portion sizes.

Portion control is something that everyone who is trying to lose weight should keep in mind and try to employ. Eating less at each meal along with regular exercise will not only help you to lose weight, but it will help you to feel better in a number of other ways, as well.

Panic disorders are one of the most common types of mental health condition, and most people who suffer from them typically have no other issues than that. They can be a serious impediment to everyday life, however, and the secret is to find the right panic disorder treatment for you.

The most important thing is to understand what a panic disorder actually is. It is basically a sudden and inexplicable fear associated with something like flying or being in a large group of people that causes the sufferer to have a panic attack. The person with such a disorder will do whatever they can to avoid situations that cause panic attacks, often becoming reclusive or finding that the disorder hinders their ability to function in everyday life.

The good news is that they are treatable, and a panic disorder treatment can usually be personalized to your own unique set of circumstances. The hardest part is acknowledging that there is a problem and making yourself go and ask for help from a mental health expert.

The two major forms of panic disorder treatment are cognitive behavioral therapy and medication. It really depends on whether the disorder is chemical or a learned behavior as to which type of treatment is used, but a psychologist or psychiatrist will make that determination.

One of the more interesting cases that I saw involving panic disorder treatment was a man who suffered horrible panic attacks at the thought of getting onto an elevator. He would literally tremble, start to sweat, and eventually have to get off of the elevator, and it took him a long while to recover. This was at work, and when he would leave, he would take take the stairs down several stories to avoid the elevator.

He finally gathered the courage to go and see a therapist, and she took a cognitive behavioral approach by talking to him about his disorder and explaining to him that his panic attacks were brought on by the perception of danger associated with the elevator. She told him that his fear was very real, but that there was no threat of harm.

She then brought him to an elevator to gradually desensitize him by taking up a few floors at a time, and asking him to rate his level on a scale of 1 to 10. At first, it was around a nine, but as time went by, the therapist taught him breathing and relaxation techniques, and he saw that he was safe, he was able to overcome his problem and even said that he no longer suffered from panic attacks.

There is help out there for people who have these problems, and psychiatrists and psychologists deal with these type of issues on a regular basis. It is really a matter of finding the right panic disorder treatment for you and following through on the treatment.
